Comrade Cycles is a neighborhood shop in Chicago, Illinois. Behind their unassuming storefront is an array of the coolest bike parts around. Shiny bits from cool boutique brands sit are on display alongside plenty of the practical things that everyday riders need too. On a recent trip to Chicago, I was finally able to stop by and visit this shop that has spun out framebuilders and bike shop owners across the country – not to mention supporting and offering sweet alt-bike builds to their community.

Here at Sklar, we pick our dealers very carefully. Bike shops are the cornerstone of so many cycling communities across the world, but not all shops are built the same. Comrade represents what we are all about. A welcoming spot with a real point of view.

We asked them our three standard questions for this episode of Take Me to Your Dealer.

Tell us about your shop in haiku.

Flat fixed, fresh tube in —
in back, a frame takes new form,
dream bike, slowly born

What role does your shop play in your community and how do you make it happen?

Comrade Cycles serves the West Town and Ukrainian Village area as a full-service neighborhood shop that's just as comfortable with a quick repair as it is with a bigger project. For everyday needs, that means fast, reliable service to get people back on the road, whether it's a flat on the way to work or a full tune-up. For riders with something bigger in mind, the shop stocks unique frame brands, parts, and flair you won't find at most bike shops, and works through a hands-on, collaborative process with each rider to build dream bikes that fit their vision. Through it all, Comrade Cycles stays approachable for everyone, whether you're bringing in your first bike or you're a seasoned racer, with staff who are kind, dedicated cyclists themselves and genuinely invested in the local cycling community and a sustainable way to get around.
